"Waiting On" Wednesday | A Court of Thorns and Roses - Sarah J. Maas

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine.

My pick of the week is:

Bloomsbury Children's
May 5, 2015

From Goodreads:

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

I've been excited about this book even before I knew anything at all about it. Sarah J. Maas is one of my favourite authors; whatever she publishes, no matter the genre - I'm sold. When I found out A Court of Thorns and Roses was a unique twist on Beauty and the Beast but with fae, I was even more sold. I cant wait to get my hands on it!

From Goodreads:

Four hundred years in the future, the Earth has turned primitive following a nuclear fire that has laid waste to civilization and nature. Though the radiation fallout has ended, for some unknowable reason every person is born with a twin. Of each pair, one is an Alpha—physically perfect in every way; and the other an Omega—burdened with deformity, small or large. With the Council ruling an apartheid-like society, Omegas are branded and ostracized while the Alphas have gathered the world’s sparse resources for themselves. Though proclaiming their superiority, for all their effort Alphas cannot escape one harsh fact: Whenever one twin dies, so does the other.
Cass is a rare Omega, one burdened with psychic foresight. While her twin, Zach, gains power on the Alpha Council, she dares to dream the most dangerous dream of all: equality. For daring to envision a world in which Alphas and Omegas live side-by-side as equals, both the Council and the Resistance have her in their sights

The Fire Sermon is something I heard about only a couple of weeks ago over at Charley Reads's channel on Youtube. It sounds like a lot of things I love to read about rolled into one -and it's kinda giving me Endgame vibes-  so I'm super excited about getting to read this when it's published!

"Waiting On" Wednesday | Lair of Dreams - Libba Bray

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine.

My pick of the week is:

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

From Goodreads:

After a supernatural showdown with a serial killer, Evie O'Neill has outed herself as a Diviner. Now that the world knows of her ability to "read" objects, and therefore, read the past, she has become a media darling, earning the title, "America's Sweetheart Seer." But not everyone is so accepting of the Diviners' abilities...

Meanwhile, mysterious deaths have been turning up in the city, victims of an unknown sleeping sickness. Can the Diviners descend into the dreamworld and catch a killer?

The Diviners is one of my favourite books and, although I've yet to read all her books, Libba Bray is one of my favourite authors. I completely devoured The Diviners when I read it back in 2012; it was unlike anything I'd read before. Bray's writing is completely magical and transports you back in time to 1920's New York with its Ziegfeld Girls and speakeasies, with some good ol' paranormal activity, and it's a read that still plays on my mind two-and-a-bit years later.
I'm so ridiculously excited and impatient for the long-awaited sequel, Lair of Dreams - it's definitely up there with my most anticipated books of the year. I think I might even shed a little tear when I finally get my hands on it.

"Waiting On" Wednesday | A Darker Shade of Magic - V.E. Schwab

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine.

My pick of the week is:

Tor Books
February 24, 2015

From Netgalley:
Kell is one of the last Travelers -magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes- as such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne -a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London... but no one speaks of that now. Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see -a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive -and that is proving trickier than they hoped.

Since my Top 6 Most Anticipated Books for Jan - May, 2015 post, I've been lucky enough to read a preview of A Darker Shade of Magic thanks to Tor and Netgalley. From reading Vicious, I knew Victoria Schwab's writing is amazing, but this, this is something else entirely - it's beautiful and utterly magical and with it she's woven intricate and unique new worlds with intriguing, extremely different characters. I've already automatically fallen in love with Kell and Lila; the way they're both written and described is so mesmerising and I can't wait to read and find out more about them when the full A Darker Shade of Magic is finally released - no doubt they both have interesting pasts and backstories! From the preview alone and that great cliffhanger we're left with, this feels like it's going to be a fantastic beginning to a great new series and I'm so, so excited to continue on with the rest of the story when the release date comes around next month.

Are you planning on picking up ADSoM?

"Waiting On" Wednesday | Armada - Ernest Cline

From Goodreads:
Zack Lightman is daydreaming through another dull math class when the high-tech dropship lands in his school's courtyard-and when the men in the dark suits and sunglasses leap out of the ship and start calling his name, he's sure he's still dreaming.

But the dream is all too real; the people of Earth need him. As Zack soon discovers, the videogame he's been playing obsessively for years isn't just a game; it's part of a massive, top-secret government training program, designed to teach gamers the skills they'll need to defend Earth from a possible alien invasion. And now…that invasion is coming.

As he and his companions prepare to enter their ships and do battle, Zack learns that the father he thought was dead is actually a key player in this secret war. And together with his father, he'll uncover the truth about the alien threat, race to prevent a genocide, and discover a mysterious third player in the interplanetary chess game he's been thrown into.

After reading Cline's Ready Player One, I'm super excited to pick up another of his books; I adore his writing style and the worlds he creates. The synopsis reminds me of Ender's Game and The Eye of Minds, two books that I thoroughly enjoyed (I'm a sucker for books that involve hardcore gaming). I'm looking forward to seeing if and how he will take this idea to new places and make it his own.
I just hope it just doesn't turn into more of an Ender's Game retelling than something unique.
